‘‘I spend the best part of a month creating the large sculpture. Prior to the making, there's a few years of research into the genus of plants to find their pollen grains. This mostly started when I was a resident artist in Seville and worked closely with a bee-specialist. The research manifests as sketches and notes in my book. The sketches are transformed into small clay maquettes to enable the development of the idea into a 3 - dimensional form. It's not a representation, more of a conceit or a figurative celebration of nature; mindfully, the importance of the wild / living landscapes to the environment.’”
Biography
Adele Howitt is an artist who predominately works with clay. A long history of experimentation with ceramic form in her studio practice as led to artwork exhibited across Europe including, the Steninge Slott Cultural Centre in Sweden for the World Art in Clay; VI Biennal de Ceràmica del Vendrell; Barcelona, Spain, Ceramica Multiplex at Kerameikon, Croatia; Edge at The Gallery Cork Street, RHS Chelsea Flower Show London, Collect Somerset House, York Ceramics Fair and CPA events, various RHS Gardens. Seedpod White is accessioned into the prestigious Yingge Ceramics Museum, near Teipei, Taiwan. Artwork is part of many collections and in public places e.g., NHS, Rotherham Museums, Barnsley Museums.
Education
Studied art foundation at Leeds College of Art; BA(hons) 2:1 Ceramics and glass (Public Art) at Chelsea School of Art (1993) University of Arts London; Ceramic and Glaze Technology at the City Literary Institute (1995) under the tutelage of Jonathan Switzerman, Robert Cooper, Dan Kelly; MA(Distinction) Public Art at the University of Central England under the supervision of Dr. Joan Gibbons (author notably of Contemporary Art and Memory: Images of Recollection and Remembrance). Adele has worked as an independent designer / maker and educationalist for 35 years and is an advocate for the crafts within regeneration.
